L-Carnitine is an amino acid that is primarily known for its ability to turn fat into energy. Long chain fatty acids are carried via L-Carnitine to cellular mitochondria, where they are burned to create energy. These mitochondria are responsible for most of the energy production of each cell. Generally speaking, L-Carnitine plays a large role in things like exercise, heart health, weight control, neurological health and infant nutrition.
We produce small amounts of L-Carnitine on our own each day. Greater amounts of L-Carnitine are present in the heart and skeletal muscle. The best place to find L-Carnitine, however, is in the liver and kidneys. In total, adults have about 20 grams of L-Carnitine stored. Consequently, these stores are depleted as L-Carnitine leaves the body through urination. To replenish the body’s supply of L-Carnitine, diet and supplementation are vital.
A coenzyme helps the performance of an enzyme. An enzyme is a protein that acts as an accelerator for natural chemical reactions within the body. Cells use coenzyme Q10 to feed cells’ mitochondria. Coenzyme Q10 is also used by the body as an endogenous antioxidant. Antioxidants protect cells from free radicals, which are highly reactive chemicals capable of damaging important cellular components like DNA and lipids. Coenzyme Q10 is found throughout body tissues, but it is most concentrated in the heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. The lowest amounts are found in the lungs. The amount of coenzyme Q10 present in body tissues decreases with age.
Cardiovascular
Original interest in creating a Carnitine/Coenzyme Q10 combination stemmed from a desire to support the mitochondria found in the heart. In endothelial cells, mitochondrial damage is an underlying cause of atherosclerosis. In fact, the factors that are widely recognized as being “red flags” for heart disease—smoking, obesity, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides—all cause mitochondrial damage. A study conducted in 2010 found that those suffering from heart failure had 40% less mitochondrial DNA and 25-80% fewer mitochondrial DNA-encoded proteins than those with normal hearts. Coenzyme Q10 has been shown to protect the heart and stimulate the immune system. Therefore, nutrients that support mitochondrial function in the heart, such as L-Carnitine and Coenzyme Q10, are an ideal way to strengthen the heart.
Neurological
However, this combination can also help brain cell function. If these mitochondria are not functioning properly, one becomes susceptible to many diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s. In fact, mitochondrial health plays a vital role in healthy aging in general.
Cancer
As we age, our mitochondria slow down, which leads to more free radicals and eventual mitochondrial mutations. Mutated mitochondria hinder apoptosis, the process by which “bad cells” are eliminated. If the mitochondria are restored, they can go back to the task of killing off dangerous cells. Analogs of coenzyme Q10 have been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells both in vitro and transplanted into rats and mice. Melanoma and breast cancer specifically were positively affected by CoQ10.
Type 2 Diabetes
A study found that some diabetics’ children, who were resistant to insulin, demonstrated 38% less mitochondrial density than children of non-diabetics. The study concluded that heredity mitochondrial dysfunction could be a contributor to type 2 diabetes.
